# Irresistible Pointless Ads (IKEA · 2018)

## Insight
The most watched YouTube videos are often the most boring: hour-long rain sounds, fireplace loops, ASMR unboxings. IKEA's products — shelves, sofas, mattresses — are objects of quiet domestic satisfaction, not excitement.

## Mechanic
IKEA produced intentionally long, slow, "boring" product films — 25-minute tours of a bookshelf, a sofa demonstration with no music, a mattress video with gentle narration. Framed as ASMR content, they were seductive for exactly the audience category advertising ignores: people who just want to chill.

## Why it worked
Behaviour inversion (making deliberately dull ads) and limitation as power (the brand's most "boring" products become content worth watching) work in combination. The meta-awareness that these are ads-that-aren't-ads makes them inherently shareable. They reached insomnia audiences, ASMR enthusiasts, and people who avoid ads — all at once.

## Steal
Ask what your audience is actually watching at 11pm. If it's not your category's content, find a way to make your product appear in that native context rather than interrupting it.
