# Name Creation Methods

Select methods based on the brief. Do not use every method mechanically.

## Existing-language methods

- **Arbitrary familiar word:** a real word from a deliberately distant domain whose associations can be owned.
- **Specific object or material:** concrete rather than abstract, chosen for sensory or behavioral relevance.
- **Action or behavior:** a verb or process reflecting how the offering changes work or experience.
- **Outcome or consequence:** names the meaningful result without describing the mechanism.
- **Human expression:** idiom, conversational fragment, instruction, exclamation, or social ritual.
- **Place or provenance:** authentic geographic, architectural, workshop, street, landscape, or origin reference with a defensible connection.
- **Person or story:** founder, historical, fictional, occupational, or character source, checked for appropriation and conflict.
- **Specialist vocabulary:** precise term from craft, science, music, law, navigation, manufacturing, ecology, or another field, used only when not already saturated.
- **Underused language layer:** regional, archaic, dialect, technical, or everyday vocabulary researched honestly for meaning and cultural context.

## Constructed methods

- **Compound:** combine meaningful complete units whose interaction creates a new image.
- **Portmanteau:** fuse fragments only when the result has natural sound and obvious spelling.
- **Morphological derivation:** use legitimate prefixes, suffixes, or grammatical transformations rather than fashionable startup fragments.
- **Sound-symbolic coinage:** build around the desired physical or emotional sound without false etymology.
- **Compression:** shorten a phrase, process, or source expression while preserving recognizability.
- **Initialism or code:** use only when it becomes pronounceable, useful, and distinct rather than an unexplained letter pile.
- **Constructed lexeme:** create a word with deliberate phonotactics, stress, spelling, and multilingual checks; document that its meaning is brand-created.

## Structural sources

- founder constraints or authentic origin detail;
- customer language and observed phrases;
- product behavior or interaction;
- internal mechanism or architecture;
- tension or contradiction central to the brand;
- artifact, ritual, or environment surrounding use;
- desired after-effect;
- cultural or historical reference with a genuine, respectful connection;
- surprising analogy from a remote field.

## Diversity rule

Two directions are not independent when they share the same central metaphor, root, suffix, rhythm, or promised association. Change at least two of:

- semantic source;
- naming type;
- word formation;
- language/register;
- syllable structure;
- sound character;
- concreteness;
- emotional temperature;
- cultural frame.
