# Whopper Freakout (Burger King · 2007)

## Insight
Most people don't realize how attached they are to a product until it's gone. The Whopper had millions of habitual buyers who had never consciously articulated their loyalty. What if you removed the Whopper from the menu without warning?

## Mechanic
BK secretly removed the Whopper from several restaurants for one day and filmed real customer reactions when told it was discontinued. The hidden-camera documentary captured genuine anger, disbelief, and grief. A 30-minute documentary and shortened TV spots aired the reactions. The twist: in some versions, customers are offered substitute burgers — they refuse, or accept grudgingly.

## Why it worked
The experiment revealed a truth BK could never have claimed credibly: people love the Whopper in a way that goes beyond rational preference. The unscripted reactions were proof no ad could manufacture. It showed P14 (product proof) through an emotional demonstration rather than a features demonstration. The absurdism was in the setup — removing a flagship product to prove people want it.

## Steal
When you need to prove loyalty or preference without a claim, remove the product and film the reaction. The absence of a loved product generates authentic emotion that reveals its true place in people's lives. Hidden camera + documentary format lends instant credibility.
