# The Whopper Detour (Burger King · 2018)

## Insight

Burger King has far fewer locations than McDonald's. Almost everyone has been to a McDonald's. What if McDonald's locations were turned into BK's distribution channel?

## Mechanic

BK app: any customer who opened the BK app within 600 feet of a McDonald's location could order a Whopper for 1 cent. The app used geolocation to detect proximity to the competitor. App became #1 in App Store within days. Customers physically visited McDonald's parking lots to trigger the deal, then drove to BK.

## Why it worked

Enemy as canvas meets tech as canvas: geofencing the competitor's location as the activation trigger was structurally brilliant — BK's weakness (fewer locations) became the mechanic. The competitor's infrastructure served BK's campaign. App adoption drove by a factor of 37 during the campaign.

## Steal

Identify the location, moment, or behavior where your competitor is strongest. Design a mechanic that activates there. Using the competitor's dominance as your distribution trigger converts their strength into your reach.
