# Born Into It (ESPN · 2012)

## Insight
Sports fandom is not chosen — it is inherited. Team loyalty is passed down through family, neighborhood, and generation. The irrational depth of sports devotion makes sense only when understood as identity transmitted through love, not logic.

## Mechanic
A long-form film documenting the way sports fandom is transmitted intergenerationally — a child who is a fan not because they chose to be, but because a parent or grandparent made them one. The film treats the inheritance of team loyalty as a form of cultural legacy.

## Why it worked
ESPN's role is to serve fans — and the deepest fans are those for whom fandom is identity, not hobby. By honoring the inherited nature of that identity, the film positions ESPN not as entertainment but as the keeper of something genuinely meaningful in people's lives. The emotion is bittersweet: the loved one who passed on the fandom may no longer be there.

## Steal
When your audience's relationship with a category is not rational but inherited and identity-level, honor the source of that inheritance rather than the category itself. The family member who created the fan is the insight, not the sport.
