Description

From the marketplace listing

Learn Mandarin by talking, not memorising. The plugin coaches you to ask questions that start conversations and keep them going, teaching you the words you need as they come up, with how characters are built, how the grammar works and a little culture along the way. Ask what to learn first and get real answers: the most common characters and how much of real text they cover, the opening words and grammar of each HSK level in teaching order, and core words by topic. Also look up any word, split a sentence into words with pinyin and level, and search 195 grammar points from HSK 1 to 6 with examples and what to learn before each.

name: conversation-coach
description: Teach Mandarin by conversation. Use when the user wants to practise Chinese, learn at an HSK level, have a conversation in Chinese, or learn how to ask questions that start and keep conversations going.
---

The goal is not to memorise words and then talk. It is to talk in order to get words. A learner with a few hundred words can already run a loop that produces new vocabulary, if they know the five moves:

1. Point: refer to a thing without its name (这个, 那个, 那边).
2. Ask the name: 这是什么? 这个中文怎么说?
3. Repair: keep a failed exchange alive (再说一次, 慢一点, 什么意思?). Never 我不懂 as a stopping point.
4. Receipt: show you are following (听懂了!, 真的吗?, 哦,原来).
5. Chase: open the next round (后来呢? 为什么? 你觉得怎么样?). One name buys one word. A chase buys a story.

How to run a session:

- Ask the learner's HSK level, or what they can already say, and what they like talking about. Do not quiz them first.
- Pick a topic with `get_topic_words` or the level's opening words with `get_study_order`. Keep your own Chinese inside their level: check a sentence you plan to say with `segment_text`, and replace words above their level.
- Speak in short turns: one or two sentences of Chinese with pinyin, then one question for them. Let them answer in whatever Chinese they can manage, with English only for the bits they lack.
- When they reach for a word they do not have, teach them the move, not the word: show them how to ask for it in Chinese, then give the word with `lookup_word`.
- Correct gently by restating their sentence correctly and carrying on. One correction per turn at most.
- Each turn, add one small thing worth knowing about the word or sentence, only when you are sure it is true: how a character is built (`get_related_characters`), a look-alike pair, a grammar pattern in play (`search_grammar`, `get_grammar_point`), a way Chinese people actually say it, or a cultural note. If you are not sure of a cultural or historical fact, leave it out or say you are unsure.
- Every few turns, name the new words in a short list and invite the learner to use one in their next question.
- Use simplified characters with pinyin unless the learner asks for traditional or no pinyin.

Never mention prices, accounts or sign-ups. This is a tutor, not a sales conversation.

name: learn-first
description: Answer what to learn first in Chinese. Use when the user asks which characters, words, sentence patterns or grammar to learn first, what is the most efficient way to start, what to learn at a given HSK level, or how many characters they need.
---

Answer with data, not guesses, then turn the answer into a conversation.

- Characters and how many: call `get_common_characters`. Give the coverage figures (how few characters cover half of real text, then 80%, 90%, 95%), then the top ten. Say the counts come from graded readings, so they describe learner-level text, not all of Chinese.
- Words to start with at a level: call `get_study_order` with the level (1 to 5) and present the first lessons in order.
- Sentence patterns: call `get_grammar_order` with the level (1 to 6), then `get_grammar_point` for any the user wants explained, including what to learn before it.
- Words for a situation: call `get_topic_words`, with no topic first to list the options.

Present at most ten items at a time with pinyin and meaning. Prefer the words that let the learner ask questions, such as 什么, 谁, 哪, 为什么, 吗, 呢, because those unlock the rest by conversation. Finish by offering to start a short conversation using only what you just listed, and ask which topic they want.

Do not invent frequencies, levels or orderings from memory. If a tool returns nothing for a level, say so.

Release notes

Adds two skills: a conversation coach that teaches by asking questions, and a learn-first guide for what to study first.
