Description

From the marketplace listing

letX is a collaborative LaTeX editor. This plugin connects ChatGPT to your letX account, so you can work on LaTeX documents from the conversation. - Find a starting point in letX's library of LaTeX templates: theses, journal and conference papers, CVs, posters, presentations and reports. - Create a letX project from a template, or from LaTeX written in the conversation. - Read and edit the files of your letX projects. When a file is replaced, its previous version stays in the project's history. - Compile a project, or a piece of LaTeX, to PDF on letX's TeX Live installation with pdfLaTeX, XeLaTeX or LuaLaTeX, and get the errors from the log with the file and line they point to, so they can be fixed. Your work stays in your letX account, where you can keep editing with a live preview and share the project with co-authors. The plugin reaches only the projects your letX account can open. You sign in with your letX account.

# Compile LaTeX with letX and fix its errors

The user's instructions come first. If they ask only for a compile, compile and report the result;
change their files only when they ask for a fix.

## What you need

- LaTeX in the conversation, or the name of one of the user's letX projects.
- For a project, find its id with `list_projects`. If several projects could be the one meant,
  ask which.

## Steps

1. Compile.
   - LaTeX from the conversation: call `compile_latex` with the whole main file as `main_tex` and
any other text files (chapters, `refs.bib`, a custom `.sty`) in `files`. letX saves them in
     the user's "AI Scratchpad" project.
   - A letX project: call `compile_project` with its id.
2. Read the result.
   - "Compiled successfully" with a PDF link: give the user the PDF link, and the editor link if
they want to keep editing in letX.
   - Errors: each one names the file and line TeX stopped at, for example
`./main.tex:16: Undefined control sequence.`, and the source line follows after `l.16`.
3. Fix, when the user wants a fix.
   - In a project, read the file the error names with `read_project_file`, then write the
corrected file with `update_project_file`. Send the whole file: it replaces the current
text, and the previous version stays in the project's history.
   - For LaTeX from the conversation, correct it and call `compile_latex` again.
   - Change only what the error needs. Keep the author's words, structure and packages.
4. Compile again. Repeat while the errors change. If the same error survives three rounds, stop
and tell the user what is still wrong and where.

## Engines

Documents that load `fontspec`, `unicode-math`, `polyglossia` or `xeCJK` need XeLaTeX or LuaLaTeX,
and documents that use `\directlua` or `luacode` need LuaLaTeX. When the errors show the document
needs another engine, set it with `set_project_compiler` for a project, or pass `compiler` to
`compile_latex`, then compile again.

## Never

- Never invent a PDF link, a page count or a result that a tool did not return.
- Never delete the user's content to make an error go away. If a fix would remove text, ask first.
- Images and other binary files cannot be sent this way. If a figure is missing, tell the user to
upload it in the letX editor.

description: Find a LaTeX template in letX's library and start a letX project from it. Use when the user needs a starting point for a thesis, a journal or conference paper, a CV, a poster, a presentation or a report, or asks for a template by name, university or publisher.
---

# Start a letX project from a template

The user's instructions come first. If they name a template, use that one.

## Steps

1. Search with `search_templates`, using the user's own words: a university, a publisher such as
IEEE or Springer, or a kind of document such as "thesis" or "resume". Add `category` only when
the user names a kind of document that matches one.
2. Show the best few matches with their name, a one-line description and the template's page
link. Ask which one they want, unless they already chose or only one fits.
3. If the user wants to know more about one, call `get_template` with its slug.
4. Create the project with `create_project_from_template` and the chosen slug.
5. Give the user the editor link from the result. If they want to start writing now, read
`main.tex` with `read_project_file` and fill it in with `update_project_file`, sending the
   whole file each time.

## Never

- Never call a template an official university or publisher template unless its details say so.
- Never create more than one project for a single request.
- If nothing matches, say so, and suggest broader words (for example "thesis" instead of a
  department's name).
