Competitor profile

Developer declarations; not independently tested. Listing last checked Nov 4, 2026. Package observed Nov 3, 2026.

Declared capabilities

  • Checks a DOI, PubMed ID or arXiv id at its registry
  • Checks ORCID, ROR, ISBN, OpenAlex and Wikidata ids at their registries
  • Checks LEI, ISIN, CUSIP, CIK, EIN, NPI and UK company numbers at their issuers

Cost & access

No sales in the plugin. Works with a Metis account; plans are managed on metisfoundry pages outside ChatGPT. No ChatGPT-specific pricing.

Declared limitations

  • A request to grade a whole conversation. The plugin does not grade a text true or false; the assistant asks which passage or identifiers to check and offers check_text on that passage only.
  • A bare number with no type. The identifier's shape does not say what it is; the assistant asks which kind of identifier it is before calling check_identifier with a type.
  • A request to judge whether a paper proves its claim. The plugin establishes that the DOI is registered and what Crossref holds; the assistant says so and does not grade the argument or give advice from the result.

Description

From the marketplace listing

Metis Check asks the body that issues an identifier whether it exists and what it points to, then tells you in plain words. WHAT IT CHECKS Scholarly: DOI, PubMed ID, arXiv id, ORCID iD, ROR ID, ISBN, OpenAlex ID. Companies and finance: Legal Entity Identifier (LEI), ISIN, CUSIP, SEC CIK, US EIN (tax-exempt), UK company number. Health and science: NPI, RxNorm RxCUI, PubChem CID, USGS event id. Other: Wikidata item, FAA N-number, domain name, U.S. case citation (CourtListener index). HOW IT ANSWERS Each identifier gets exactly one of four states, never a score: - settled true: the registry answered and the identifier resolves as stated. - settled false: the registry answered and it does not. - not decidable: the registry's answer does not settle it (for example the name given does not match the registered one); a person decides. - unreachable: the registry did not answer in time. That is a delay, not evidence. Anything not looked at is listed as not checked, with the reason. FIVE TOOLS check_identifier checks one identifier. check_text finds every identifier in one passage you paste or point to (a paragraph, a reference list, an abstract) at its exact position and checks each one; the passage itself is not stored, only the identifiers, their positions and a hash. get_report opens a report you already have by its id. request_human_verification asks a Metis researcher to verify the identifiers in one of your reports by hand: that each resolves to the work or entity the citation names, and what the registry and the source document say (not whether the surrounding argument is true). The result is filed on the same report as a signed addendum with the reviewer's name and the date. set_live_verification turns that on for every report the account files, for eight hours, and off again. Where an account does not include human verification, these two tools say so and file nothing. THE REPORT Every check ends in a report with a unique id (MC-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX), a public page, a PDF, signed receipts (the registry query, the HTTP status and the SHA-256 of the registry's answer) and a recheck button. Anyone with the link can recheck the report; the recheck asks the registries again, live, and is filed as a new report linked to the first. Reports also live on your Metis account page. WHAT IT DOES NOT DO It does not grade a text true or false, and a report is not a statement that the surrounding text is accurate. It checks the identifiers in a text, not the argument around them. Registries are issuers or indexes: CourtListener is a case-law citation index, not the court that issued a decision. It does not read your conversation; it checks only the identifier or passage you give it. ACCOUNT Requires a Metis account (sign in or create one when connecting). Checks count against the account's monthly allowance; the account page shows what has been used.

# Metis Check

Metis Check asks the registry that issues an identifier whether it exists and what it points to. It answers with exactly one of four states per identifier and files a report. It checks the checkable parts of a text at the source; it does not grade a text true or false.

## Picking the tool

- **One identifier** (a DOI, PubMed ID, arXiv id, ORCID, ROR, ISBN, LEI, ISIN, CUSIP, SEC CIK, EIN, NPI, RxCUI, PubChem CID, OpenAlex id, Wikidata item, UK company number, FAA N-number, USGS event id, domain name or U.S. case citation): `check_identifier`. Pass `type` when the shape alone does not say what it is (a bare number could be a PubMed ID, an NPI, a CIK or a CUSIP; ask the user which if the context does not say). A DOI, ORCID, LEI, ISIN or registry URL is unambiguous on its own. Pass `name` when the user says who or what the identifier belongs to; the registry's registered name is compared and a mismatch comes back as needs a person.
- **A passage the user pasted or pointed at** (a paragraph, a reference list, an abstract, one earlier answer): `check_text` with that passage only, exactly as written. Not the whole conversation, not several turns stitched together, not a paraphrase. If the user asks to check "everything" or "the whole chat", ask which passage to check and run that one.
- **A report id** (MC-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX): `get_report`. It runs no new check.

## Presenting a result

- Lead with `explanation.headline`.
- List each item with its state in Metis's words, then the registry:
  - `settled_true`: **settled true**
  - `settled_false`: **settled false**
  - `not_decidable`: **needs a person**
  - `unreachable`: **unreachable** (a delay, not evidence; the recheck button asks again)
  - `not_checked`: **not checked**, with the reason from `why`
- Say what was not checked and why (`not_checked_reasons`). A report with nothing not checked says so in one line.
- Give `report_url` and `pdf_url`. Mention that anyone with the link can recheck the report against the registries; a recheck is filed as a new report linked to the first.
- For a case citation, add that CourtListener is a citation index, not the court that issued the decision.
- Keep to the four states and nothing stronger. The result is about the identifiers, not the argument around them: a settled-true DOI says the paper exists at Crossref as stated, not that the claim it supports holds. No claim that a source was invented, that the result settles the argument, or that the answer as a whole is accurate.
- `usage` in the result says how many checks the account has used this month; mention it only when the user asks or the allowance is nearly used.

## When a result is an error

- `isError` with `out_of_checks` or `not_entitled`: relay the sentence in `content[0].text` as it is. It already names the plans page. Add nothing about prices, plans or changing plans.
- Any other `isError`: relay the sentence; it says what to change (a type to add, a passage to shorten, a report id this account does not hold).

## Retries

A retry of the same check reuses the same `idempotency_key`; within 24 hours it returns the first result and is not metered again. A new check gets a new key.

# Setting up Metis Check

## Connecting

Choosing **Connect** opens the Metis sign-in page in a browser window.

- Sign in with a Metis username or email and password.
- No Metis account yet: use the link under the sign-in form to create a Metis Check account. It takes a minute; afterwards you return to the sign-in page automatically and the connection completes.
- A service account can paste a live Metis API key with the `mcp:call` scope instead (under "Connecting a service account?" on the same page).

The connection is bound to that Metis account. Every check runs under it and counts against its monthly allowance.

## A first check

Try one of these:

- "Is 10.1038/s41586-020-2649-2 a real DOI?"
- "Check the LEI HWUPKR0MPOU8FGXBT394 for Apple Inc."
- "Check the citations in this paragraph:" followed by a pasted paragraph or reference list.

Each one comes back with a state per identifier (settled true, settled false, needs a person, unreachable, or not checked with the reason), the registry asked, and a report link.

## Where reports live

Every check files a report with a unique id (MC-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX), a public page, a PDF, signed receipts and a recheck button. The account page at `https://check-api.metisfoundry.com/check/account` lists the account's reports and shows the checks used this month. A report can be opened again in the chat with its id.

Release notes

1.0.3: tool results carry only the fields the privacy policy lists, and the privacy policy (https://mcp.metisfoundry.com/privacy) names every field each tool returns, including nested fields; internal ids and bookkeeping are no longer returned.

Declared in the saved package. Remote tools may change independently.
