Price machined parts from CAD

From the developer

Declared capabilities

  • Price a part from a STEP/IGES model or PDF drawing
  • Compare materials and quantities
  • List your shop's materials and rates

Cost & access

QuotedPart returns price estimates only. It does not sell parts, place orders or process payments.

Declared limitations

  • No part given. QuotedPart prices only from a part's STEP/IGES/DXF model or PDF drawing, so it cannot price a part it has not seen.
  • Not a part file. A spreadsheet is not a STEP, IGES, DXF or PDF file, so there is nothing to measure or price.
  • Ordering and payment. QuotedPart returns price estimates only; it has no tool to choose a shop, place an order or take payment.

Onboarding example

What would this STEP file cost to machine in 6061 aluminum, 25 pieces?

Description

From the marketplace listing

QuotedPart prices machined parts the way a job shop does. Give it a STEP or IGES model, a PDF drawing, or both, and it measures the part, picks a process (CNC milling, CNC turning, sheet laser or additive), builds the routing and returns a price breakdown: material, each machine operation with setup and run time, programming, finishing, extra charges and markup, at several quantities, with lead time. You can change the material, quantity or process and re-price without uploading again. Every estimate is saved as a quote in your QuotedPart account, priced with your shop's own machines, rates, materials and markup, and comes with a link that opens it there. Who it is for: job shops that quote with QuotedPart. It needs an existing QuotedPart account: the first time, you sign in to QuotedPart and allow the assistant. You can unlink it any time under Integrations in QuotedPart. Limits: prices are estimates from your shop's rates, not a quote sent to anyone. Parts must be single solid bodies or clear drawings; assemblies, weldments and drawings that leave sizes open come back as needing input. Files you price are saved with the quote in your shop, as described in QuotedPart's privacy policy.

# Quote a part with QuotedPart

QuotedPart prices parts the way a job shop does, from the 3D model and/or the PDF drawing:
material, machine time per operation, setups, programming, finishing, extra charges and
markup, at several quantities. The tools come from the `quotedpart` MCP server and work in
the person's own QuotedPart account: they sign in to QuotedPart and allow the assistant once,
and every estimate is saved as a quote in their shop, priced with that shop's rates.

## Steps

1. **Get the part.** Ask for a STEP/IGES model (.step, .stp, .iges, .igs) or a PDF drawing,
or both. Pass a public link as `file_url`. For a file on the person's computer, call
`create_upload`, PUT the raw bytes to `upload_url` (for example
   `curl -sS --upload-file "<file>" "<upload_url>"`), then pass `upload_id` (the
`upload_url` itself also works as the `upload_id`). Use
`file_base64` only for a small file when you cannot run a command. Always give `filename`
with its extension. A drawing that belongs to a model goes in the `drawing_*` fields of
the same call (its own `create_upload` for `drawing_upload_id`).
2. **Material.** If the person named one, pass it as `material` (an id or a plain name such
as "6061" or "304 stainless"). If they want options, call `list_materials` (filter by
`process` when known) and offer the closest two or three. If they named none, leave it
out: the server uses the drawing's material or the shop default.
3. **Quantity.** Pass the quantity they gave. If none, leave it out and show the price
breaks the tool returns, so the setup cost spread over the lot is visible.
4. **Shop.** Parts are priced in the person's own shop. Call `list_shops` only when they ask
about its currency, rates or markup.
5. **Estimate.** Call `estimate_price`. If the result has `status: "reading"` (a drawing is
still being read), call `get_quote` a little later with the quote's number as the
result gives it (for example Q-1001) or its `quote_id`.
6. **Change it.** To try another material, quantity or process on the same part, call
`update_estimate` with the quote's number (or `quote_id`). When the quote has more than
one part, always pass `part_id`: the part's name as the result gives it, or its line
number (1 is the first). If the tool changes nothing and lists the lines instead, pick
the line the person meant, or ask them which one. Do not upload the file again.
7. **Report.** Lead with the unit price and line total at the selected quantity, in the
returned `currency`. Then the cost lines of that break, the other quantities as a short
table, lead time, and any `checks` or `notes` the tool returned. Call the quote by its
number and parts by name, as the result does, not by internal ids. End with `quote_url`:
it opens the quote in the person's QuotedPart account, where they can adjust it and send it.

## Rules

- The price is an estimate from the shop's own rates, not a quote sent to anyone. Say so once.
- Report prices exactly as returned. Do not round, convert currency or recompute them.
- When a part comes back `needs_input` or `failed`, or the tool returns an error, pass its
message on in one line and say what would fix it (for example re-exporting the STEP file).
- Upload only files the person gave you for pricing.
