## A. Punctuation in complex sentences

### A.1. Comma before subordinating conjunctions

Subordinate clause is separated by comma. Conjunctions: **что, который, где, когда, если, чтобы, потому что, так как** mark the boundary.

Base rule: comma before the conjunction starting the subordinate clause.

A restrictive or intensifying particle standing in front of the conjunction takes the comma with it: the boundary moves left, it does not disappear. `вызывай ru-text только когда я прошу` -> `вызывай ru-text, только когда я прошу`. Particles: только, лишь, исключительно, как раз, даже, ведь, всё же. (ПАС §116–117; Розенталь §33.6.) The mistake is dropping the comma altogether because the particle looks like part of the main clause — it is not, and the clause it introduces is still subordinate.

When comma before "что" is NOT needed:

construction|comma?|rule
compound conjunction stays whole|no|"потому что" is one unit; comma before "потому", not "что"
negation + что|no|fixed expression: "не то что обидно"
semantically whole phrase|no|"делай что хочешь" -- indivisible
что = interrogative pronoun|no|"что случилось?" -- not a conjunction
two conjunctions without "то"|no|no comma between "что" and "если" when "то" follows
parallel subordinates with "и"|no|"я знаю, что он придёт и что поможет" -- no comma before second "что"

Compound conjunctions -- where to place the comma:

Compound subordinating conjunctions can be split: comma moves from start of subordinate to first part of conjunction when author emphasizes reason/condition.

- Neutral: comma before whole conjunction ("потому что", "для того чтобы")
- Emphatic: comma after first part ("потому, что"; "для того, чтобы")
- Same pattern: несмотря на то(,) что; в связи с тем(,) что; ввиду того(,) что; благодаря тому(,) что

### A.2. Dash between subject and predicate

Dash is placed when subject and predicate are the same part of speech without a linking verb.

subject|predicate|dash?
noun (nom.)|noun (nom.)|yes: Москва -- столица России
infinitive|infinitive|yes: Жить -- Родине служить
noun (nom.)|infinitive|yes: Наша задача -- закончить проект
infinitive|noun (nom.)|yes: Читать -- большое удовольствие
numeral|numeral|yes: Дважды два -- четыре
noun (nom.)|это/вот/значит + noun|yes: Язык -- это инструмент мышления

Dash is NOT placed:

1. "не" before predicate: Бедность не порок
2. Subject is personal pronoun: Он врач (but: Он -- это тот, кто поможет)
3. Parenthetical/adverb/conjunction/particle between: Собака тоже друг; Вода словно зеркало
4. Predicate before subject (inversion): Замечательный человек ваш отец
5. как/будто/словно between: Глаза как звёзды

### A.3. Colon

1. Generalizing word before enumeration: На столе: договор, акт, счёт-фактура
2. Asyndetic compound -- cause (= потому что): Я не пошёл: поднялась температура
3. Asyndetic -- clarification (= а именно): Погода была ужасная: дул ветер, шёл дождь
4. Asyndetic -- supplement (= что): Я чувствовал: что-то изменилось
5. Direct speech after author's words: Он сказал: "Я уже здесь"

### A.4. Semicolon

1. Extended parallel members with internal commas
2. Significantly extended parts of asyndetic compound sentence
3. Lowercase list items (see section F in editorial-grammar)

### A.5. Introductory words punctuation

Introductory words/phrases: commas on both sides (mid-sentence) or one comma (start/end).

NOT introductory (no commas): ведь, вот, именно, между тем (= тем временем), примерно — и другие частицы/наречия, ошибочно принимаемые за вводные (всё-таки, даже, как бы, поэтому, притом, причём, якобы и т. д.): полная таблица в §B ниже.
