When describing themselves to a stranger, they emphasize their perceived flaws — "my jaw is too wide," "I have a big forehead" — while others describe the same women with warmth and accuracy. The gap between self-perception and how others see you is a measurable, demonstrable truth about how women relate to their own appearance. ## Mechanic An FBI-trained forensic artist sits behind a curtain. Women describe themselves; he draws from description only. Then a stranger who met the woman briefly describes the same woman; he draws again. The two portraits are placed side by side. The self-described portrait is always harsher, tighter, less open. The stranger's portrait is closer to beauty. Women see the difference and cry. 114 million YouTube views in the first week — the most watched branded video in history at the time. ## Why it worked P12 (social experiment): the forensic artist creates genuine third-party credibility — this is not Dove telling women they are more beautiful than they think; this is an FBI-trained professional and a stranger demonstrating it. P03 (behavior inversion): beauty advertising shows external beauty; this reveals internal distortion. The emotional moment is earned through a structured experiment, not scripted drama. Cannes Grand Prix. Effie Grand Prix. ## Steal Design the experiment so that the result could plausibly go the other way. Real Beauty Sketches works because the women might have described themselves accurately, or even generously — the fact that they do not is what makes the finding meaningful rather than manufactured. Credibility requires genuine risk of a different outcome. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p12]] - Sibling: [[always-like-a-girl-2014.md|Like a Girl]] - Sibling: [[pg-the-talk-2017.md|The Talk]] - Emotion match: [[apple-1984-1984.md|1984]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
