# Bouncy Balls (Sony Bravia · 2005)
## Insight
LCD TVs were competing on specifications — resolution, refresh rate, contrast ratio — in ways consumers couldn't meaningfully compare. Sony's Bravia had superior colour reproduction, but "better colour" as a claim was forgettable. The insight: show colour as an experience that is physically, viscerally overwhelming.
## Mechanic
250,000 coloured rubber balls were released at the top of Larkin Street in San Francisco's Tenderloin district and filmed bouncing down the steep hill. No CGI. Real balls, real street, real physics. A four-person soundtrack ("Heartbeats" by José González) and slow motion made the sequence hypnotic. The 60-second and 2-minute versions both circulated; the longer version spread more virally.
## Why it worked
P08 (craft as message): the impossibility of the real-world execution was immediately apparent and impossible to dismiss as special effects. The audience understood instinctively that this was real — the imperfections, the physics, the chaos. That physical reality transferred to the product claim: this TV shows real colour, not processed colour. P11 (absurdism): the premise — 250,000 balls down a San Francisco hill — is preposterous in scale, which is precisely what made it magnetic. The spot generated enormous earned media before "going viral" was a mainstream concept.
## Steal
When a product attribute is abstract (colour quality, sound quality, precision), find the physical analogy that makes it impossible to ignore. The physical analogy must be impossible to replicate with a smaller budget — scale and physical reality are what make the transfer of quality credible.
