The insight: human behavior is not driven by knowledge or values but by immediate reward. Fun is the most accessible immediate reward. ## Mechanic A social experiment platform: what if you made the right behavior fun? Executions included the Piano Stairs (subway stairs turned into piano keys — 66% more people chose stairs over escalator), The World's Deepest Bin (a rubbish bin that played a cartoon falling sound when used — 72kg of litter collected vs 31kg at nearby bin), and The Bottle Bank Arcade (a recycling point converted to an arcade game — used 100x more than a nearby standard bottle bank). All filmed as social experiments with real data. ## Why it worked P12 (social experiment): the experiments produced real behavioral data that served as evidence, not entertainment. The results were genuinely surprising and counterintuitive — the scale of behavior change (66%, 100x) exceeded what audiences expected. P09 (user as co-author): participants in the experiments generated the content; their unscripted reactions were the campaign material. The "Fun Theory" as a platform was ownable and extensible — it described a philosophy that VW could apply to product development, not just advertising. ## Steal When behavior change is the goal, change the incentive structure before changing the message. The experiment format produces credible data that functions as proof. Brand the philosophy, not the executions — "The Fun Theory" as a named idea allowed VW to extend the concept across years and contexts. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p09]] - Sibling: [[red-bull-stratos-2012.md|Stratos]] - Sibling: [[snickers-hungerithm-2016.md|Hungerithm]] - Emotion match: [[metro-trains-dumb-ways-to-die-2012.md|Dumb Ways to Die]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
