# Detectives (Apple · 2022)

## Insight

Privacy is abstract until you see what's being collected — the data surveillance behind everyday apps is a procedural thriller happening to everyone, without their knowledge or consent.

## Mechanic

Film styled as a noir detective thriller: private investigators (representing data brokers) follow a person through their digital life, collecting and selling their data. Apple's App Tracking Transparency tools appear as the solution — framed as taking back control from the surveillance economy.

## Why it worked

Absurdist thriller format made privacy concrete: a real technical issue (app tracking) was rendered as a genre film, making the abstract comprehensible and the stakes viscerally felt. The noir aesthetic made data harvesting feel as threatening as it actually is.

## Steal

When your product solves a problem the audience cannot directly see, make the invisible threat visible through genre filmmaking. The genre's conventions tell the audience how to feel before you explain what's happening.
