The silhouette is the perfect visual metaphor for that interior-exterior split: present but elsewhere, public but private. ## Mechanic Solid-color backgrounds (hot pink, electric blue, lime green) with black silhouettes of people dancing, headphone cord visible, earbuds in. No faces. No demographic signals. Pure movement, pure energy, pure color. The design decision (P17) was the concept: silhouettes made the product universal (any person, any age, any culture) and made the music experience visible. The campaign extended across TV, outdoor, print, and became one of the most recognizable visual systems in advertising history. ## Why it worked P17 (design as idea) at its highest level: the creative decision — black silhouette on saturated color — was the entire argument. No copy. No feature list. No demographic targeting. The silhouette communicated "this could be you" more effectively than any representation of an actual person could, because the audience was invited to project themselves onto it. The campaign was also functionally perpetual: any song, any silhouette, any color. The design system was the brief. ## Steal When your product changes how people experience the world rather than what they own, find a visual metaphor for the experience rather than the product. A design solution that removes all demographic specificity can reach more people than any targeted representation. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p17]] - Sibling: [[absolut-absolut-campaign-1981.md|Absolut _____]] - Sibling: [[apple-think-different-1997.md|Think Different]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
