The photographic image of enemy leaders kissing — an act of reconciliation — is impossible in reality but imaginable in design. If hatred is a learned behavior, "unhate" is the counter-program. ## Mechanic A series of photomontage images showing world leaders who are publicly opposed kissing each other on the lips — Barack Obama and Hu Jintao, Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel, Benjamin Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas, Pope Benedict XVI and Ahmed Mohamed el-Tayeb. The images were released as global billboard campaign and online simultaneously. Pope image pulled after Vatican protest. The controversy generated tens of millions of media impressions. ## Why it worked P17 (design as idea): the photomontage is the idea — no copy needed beyond the campaign word "Unhate." The design decision (compositing world leaders kissing) is itself the message. P13 (truth telling): the images say something true and uncomfortable about the performative nature of political enmity while presenting an impossible image. Benetton had the authentic brand standing to do this — decades of provocative social campaigns made this credible rather than opportunistic. ## Steal Find the image that is impossible in reality but logically necessary as a statement. The world leaders kissing cannot happen in reality — which is precisely why it is effective as a designed image. The design gap between reality and the image is where the message lives. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p17]] - Sibling: [[absolut-absolut-campaign-1981.md|Absolut _____]] - Sibling: [[apple-think-different-1997.md|Think Different]] - Emotion match: [[apple-1984-1984.md|1984]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
