# Cavemen (GEICO · 2004)

## Insight
The phrase "so easy a caveman could do it" — intended as praise for simplicity — is unconsciously offensive if cavemen actually exist and are perfectly sophisticated. Social slights delivered through careless idiom are invisible to the person using them and deeply felt by the person targeted.

## Mechanic
A long-running campaign featuring modern, fully civilised cavemen living contemporary professional lives who are repeatedly, casually offended by GEICO's "so easy a caveman could do it" slogan. Their reaction is not rage — it's the quiet, exhausted indignation of someone used to casual prejudice. The campaign spawned a network television show.

## Why it worked
The insight was a genuine inversion: the cavemen were the most socially aware characters in every scene. Their sense of injury was specific, recognisable, and genuinely funny because it captured the particular tone of casual prejudice — not dramatic but persistent. The campaign worked as comedy and as social observation simultaneously.

## Steal
The richest territory for brand absurdism is social commentary wearing comedy as a disguise. The cavemen weren't just funny — they were a specific observation about how progressive self-image and casual prejudice coexist. The brand claim became the punchline and the problem simultaneously.
