The only credible response was the one that acknowledged the absurdity of the situation at the same volume as the outrage. ## Mechanic A full-page newspaper ad: the KFC bucket with the letters rearranged to "FCK." One line of body copy acknowledging the situation with genuine humility and characteristic brand wit. No hedging, no corporate-speak, no blame. Just the bucket, the rearranged letters, and an honest apology that made the audience laugh and forgive simultaneously. ## Why it worked P05 (cultural hijack) of their own crisis — KFC turned the worst news day in their brand history into their most celebrated creative work. P02 (enemy): the enemy here is corporate crisis communication convention, which KFC obliterated by being the opposite. The bucket visual — the most recognisable element of the brand — used against itself. One design decision (FCK) did everything the copy could not. Black Pencil and Cannes Grand Prix confirmed this as one of the most efficient single acts of brand communication ever made. ## Steal The crisis response that wins is not the managed apology but the one that meets the audience's emotional register exactly. Anger and absurdity require absurdity and honesty in return — not careful corporate language. The brand that can laugh at itself in a genuine emergency earns permanent goodwill. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p05]] - Sibling: [[addictaide-like-my-addiction-2017.md|Like My Addiction]] - Sibling: [[beats-game-before-the-game-2014.md|The Game Before the Game]] - Emotion match: [[absolut-absolut-campaign-1981.md|Absolut _____]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
