Meanwhile, SMS text message technology was ubiquitous and essentially free for Smart's subscribers. Children could receive text messages on basic phones but couldn't access textbooks. ## Mechanic Smart partnered with the Department of Education to encode entire school textbook content into SMS format — the character constraints of text messaging forced the content into compressed, scannable units. Textbooks were compressed and sent as free SMS messages to students' phones. The same character limit that makes texting constraining became the format for educational content. Cannes Grand Prix winner. ## Why it worked P17 (design as idea): the SMS format constraints became the design solution — shortening and simplifying textbook content made it more accessible, not less educational. P03 (behavior inversion): the conventional wisdom that textbooks require paper and printing was inverted; the phone's limitation (character count) became an advantage. The campaign generated value not through advertising but through genuinely solving an educational infrastructure problem with existing telecom infrastructure. ## Steal Find where a technology constraint that is typically a problem (character limits, low bandwidth, small screens) maps exactly onto a real-world constraint (insufficient textbooks, limited distribution). The constraint is the solution. Tech-as-infrastructure-not-advertising is more durable than tech-as-advertising. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p17]] - Sibling: [[absolut-absolut-campaign-1981.md|Absolut _____]] - Sibling: [[apple-think-different-1997.md|Think Different]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
