The absence of a counter to that symbol was itself a statement about corporate power. State Street needed to signal its commitment to gender diversity on corporate boards without a claim — only a physical act would be credible. ## Mechanic A bronze statue of a small girl, hands on hips, staring down the Charging Bull — placed on Bowling Green, lower Manhattan, on International Women's Day 2017. No copy beyond a small plaque. The statue changed the meaning of an existing landmark without touching it. Social media did the rest: the Fearless Girl became one of the most photographed spots in New York City within 24 hours. ## Why it worked P17 (design as idea): the entire campaign is one sculpture. No copy needed. P09 (user as co-author): millions of people photographed themselves with the Fearless Girl and shared — the campaign's media was the audience's participation. The genius is the contextual dependency: the girl means something only because of the bull. Remove the bull, remove the meaning. State Street did not add a statement to a space; they changed what an existing statement meant. ## Steal Find a symbol in the culture that carries a meaning you want to challenge. Rather than attacking it, add something to its context that changes its meaning without changing the original. The addition says everything; the original does the work. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p09]] - Sibling: [[red-bull-stratos-2012.md|Stratos]] - Sibling: [[snickers-hungerithm-2016.md|Hungerithm]] - Emotion match: [[always-like-a-girl-2014.md|Like a Girl]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
