# Meet Graham (Transport Accident Commission · 2016)

## Insight
Road safety campaigns rely on statistics and graphic footage — both of which audiences have learned to screen out. The reason people don't believe car crashes will kill them is that they have never seen what it would actually take for a human body to survive a crash.

## Mechanic
Working with trauma surgeon Christian Kenfield, road safety engineer David Logan, and artist Patricia Piccinini, TAC commissioned a life-size hyperrealistic sculpture of "Graham" — the only human form anatomically capable of surviving a car crash. Enlarged skull, ribcage that functions as a crumple zone, absent neck, reinforced knees. The sculpture toured Australian galleries and was accompanied by an interactive website.

## Why it worked
Design as idea (P17): the sculpture itself was the argument — more powerful than any statistic or piece of footage. Truth-telling (P13): rather than showing what a crash does to a person, it showed what a person would need to look like to be safe — an argument the audience had no defence against. Moving the campaign into gallery space gave it cultural legitimacy and audience self-selection.

## Steal
Convert a safety warning into an art object. When audiences have been numbed to data and shock footage, a physical artefact they choose to visit and engage with creates the engagement that interruption cannot.
