Neither was self-aware about the conventions of beer advertising itself. The category had accumulated so many conventions — big music, epic visuals, slow motion — that the conventions themselves were ripe for satire. ## Mechanic An epic, sweeping cinematic commercial — hundreds of men running across a hillside, orchestral music swelling — with a self-referential narration: "This is a big ad. A big, big ad." The ad knowingly advertises the fact that it is a large, expensive advertisement for beer. The final tagline acknowledges the cost: "Be worth it." The joke is the meta-awareness of the ad about itself. ## Why it worked P11 (absurdism): the absurdism is meta — the commercial's self-awareness of its own conventions is the joke. P03 (behavior inversion): beer advertising conventions (epic scale, slow motion, masculine scenery) are deployed and simultaneously mocked. The Australian deadpan sensibility made the self-reference feel genuinely funny rather than arch or clever. The "Big Ad" spread rapidly in the early YouTube era — before pre-roll advertising existed, audiences shared ads they found genuinely amusing. Cannes recognition validated international legibility of the Australian humor register. ## Steal Every established advertising category has conventions so embedded they are invisible. Name them. Deploy them sincerely and simultaneously mock them. The meta-awareness of the ad about its own genre is only available to brands confident enough in their identity to not need the conventions to do the work. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p11]] - Sibling: [[metro-trains-dumb-ways-to-die-2012.md|Dumb Ways to Die]] - Sibling: [[old-spice-man-your-man-could-smell-like-2010.md|The Man Your Man Could Smell Like]] - Emotion match: [[absolut-absolut-campaign-1981.md|Absolut _____]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
