# Small World Machines (Coca-Cola · 2012)
## Insight
India and Pakistan have one of the world's most charged political relationships — yet ordinary Indians and Pakistanis share more cultural DNA than any border acknowledges. Coca-Cola's claim ("Open Happiness") requires demonstrating that shared humanity is possible across the deepest cultural divisions.
## Mechanic
Vending machines equipped with two-way live video screens were placed in a shopping mall in Lahore and a mall in Delhi. When two strangers from each country approached simultaneously, they could only get a Coke if they completed a task together — touching hands, drawing peace signs, dancing. Real people, real moment, filmed as a social experiment.
## Why it worked
The mechanic forced co-operation at the most intimate scale — two strangers, face to face, across a political divide — and made it joyful rather than solemn. The social experiment yielded genuine moments of connection that no scripted version could replicate. Coca-Cola was the enabler, not the hero.
## Steal
When a brand claim is about connection, the campaign must produce real connection rather than depicting it. Build the mechanism, step back, and document what happens. The brand's job is infrastructure, not performance.
