# Spicy But Not Too Spicy (Doritos · 2024)

## Insight
The category of spicy food marketing has become dominated by extreme heat-focused machismo — every brand competes on intensity. The majority of consumers actually want flavour with accessible heat.

## Mechanic
A parody ad featuring Walton Goggins that mocks the aggressive "extreme spicy" advertising codes of the category, positioning Doritos as the self-aware alternative that delivers satisfying flavour without the macho performance of extreme heat culture.

## Why it worked
The category code inversion — using humour to mock the conventions every competitor was earnestly employing — positioned Doritos as culturally intelligent while competitors signalled insecurity through hyperbole.

## Steal
When a category has an over-earnest convention (extreme, intense, aggressive), be the first to parody it from within. Self-awareness about the category's absurdity reads as confidence.
