Its competitors communicated in jargon and abstraction. The insight: what EDS does — managing complex, unruly, independent-minded systems across an enterprise — is exactly like herding cats. ## Mechanic A Super Bowl spot shot as a western documentary — cattlemen on horseback, sweeping cinematography, dramatic music — herding thousands of cats across an American prairie. Cowboys nurse scratched hands, brush cat hair off their jackets, and stare into the sunset with quiet pride. Tagline: "EDS. Managing the complex. Moving business forward." Played entirely straight, as if cat herding were a noble profession. ## Why it worked The absurdism was load-bearing strategy, not entertainment: the visual metaphor of cat herding communicated EDS's actual value proposition more clearly than any product description could. Decision-makers who recognized the chaos of enterprise IT immediately understood the analogy. The western film format gave the work dignity and scale — EDS appeared competent and serious even through comedy. Running this in the Super Bowl, then the most expensive advertising slot in the world, signaled to B2B buyers that EDS was a legitimate, substantial company. The meta-message of the spend was as important as the message of the spot. ## Steal When a B2B value proposition is complex and abstract, find the physical metaphor that makes it immediately visceral. The best B2B metaphors have two qualities: they describe the problem (herding cats = chaos) and the solution (expert herders = EDS manages the chaos) simultaneously. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p11]] - Sibling: [[metro-trains-dumb-ways-to-die-2012.md|Dumb Ways to Die]] - Sibling: [[old-spice-man-your-man-could-smell-like-2010.md|The Man Your Man Could Smell Like]] - Emotion match: [[absolut-absolut-campaign-1981.md|Absolut _____]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
