Colin Kaepernick was not a risk — he was a proof of brand conviction in the only moment that conviction could be tested. ## Mechanic Nike launched a 90-second film narrated by Kaepernick — whose NFL career was effectively ended for kneeling during the national anthem — featuring athletes including LeBron James, Serena Williams, and Paralympic athletes. The tagline: "Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything." The film was released on the 30th anniversary of "Just Do It." Nike stock dropped 2% in one day; it rose 36% over the following year. ## Why it worked P04 (brand as activist) executed at maximum cost — Nike did not choose a safe issue but took a side in an active national controversy. P13 (truth-telling) named what the culture was avoiding: that protesting injustice had become a punishable act. The brand's sacrifice (stock price, consumer boycotts) was the proof that the message was genuine. No campaign in this era more precisely demonstrated the Kaepernick-as-brand-value equation. ## Steal A brand's willingness to lose something is its credibility. If the social position costs nothing, it signals nothing. Find the issue where your brand's existing customers will push back — and ask whether your conviction is strong enough to absorb that pressure. If it is, the act becomes the brand. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p04]] - Sibling: [[the-zimbabwean-trillion-dollar-campaign-2008.md|Trillion Dollar Campaign]] - Sibling: [[tuvalu-the-first-digital-nation-2022.md|The First Digital Nation]] - Emotion match: [[apple-1984-1984.md|1984]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
