# The First Edible Mascot (Pop-Tarts · 2023)

## Insight
College Bowl games are corporate sponsorship theater — brands put their name on everything but rarely become the event. Pop-Tarts saw that a mascot costume is literally a giant food costume, and that Pop-Tarts are literally edible. The gap between those two facts was the idea.

## Mechanic
At the Pop-Tarts Bowl (college football), the mascot "Strawberry Pop-Tart" was not a promotional character but a sentient pastry who "volunteered" to be eaten after the game. The giant Pop-Tart mascot descended into a giant toaster on the field, was "toasted," and then physically served to players and fans. Entirely absurd, entirely real.

## Why it worked
Three patterns stacked: P05 (hijacking the cultural moment of college football), P09 (crowd participation and the feeding ritual), P11 (complete commitment to absurdist logic — the mascot was actually eaten). The internet responded because the stunt had internal consistency: if you name a Bowl game after a food and put a food mascot in it, follow the logic to its absurd conclusion. The willingness to commit made it shareable and unforgettable.

## Steal
When a brand has naming rights or sponsorship of an event, don't just put your logo on it — inhabit the event through the product's own logic. Follow the absurd premise to its inevitable, committed conclusion.
