Young people were angry, but had no visceral, undeniable proof delivered at scale. Telling teens "smoking kills" changed nothing — showing who killed whom could. ## Mechanic Youth activists delivered 1,200 body bags to the headquarters of Philip Morris in New York City — one for each person who dies daily from tobacco-related illness in the United States. The stunt was filmed, amplified through TV spots, and became the launch of the Truth anti-tobacco campaign that would define a generation. ## Why it worked The body bags made an abstract statistic physical and unmovable. Philip Morris could not spin 1,200 bags on their doorstep. The action gave young people agency — they were the activists, not the victims. Truth inverted the power dynamic: instead of vulnerable teens needing protection, teens were confronting a corporation. P17 element: the visual language of the bags was design-as-message — no headline needed. ## Steal When a statistic has been cited so often it no longer lands — make it physical and unmovable. Body count = body bags. Abstract death toll = concrete objects delivered to the responsible party. The action forces a confrontation the villain cannot walk away from. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p13]] - Sibling: [[apple-1984-1984.md|1984]] - Sibling: [[calm-the-last-photo-2022.md|The Last Photo]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
