Steve Jobs returned to a company that had lost its identity. The insight: Apple's identity was never about technology — it was about the people who use technology to change the world. Align the brand with every revolutionary, artist, and visionary in history, and you claim that territory without a single product claim. ## Mechanic A 60-second black-and-white film narrated by Richard Dreyfuss (later Jobs himself), showing photographs of 20th century visionaries — Einstein, Gandhi, Chaplin, Martin Luther King Jr., Picasso, Amelia Earhart, Jim Henson, John Lennon — while the narration speaks directly to the "crazy ones, misfits, rebels, troublemakers." The final frame: the Apple logo and "Think Different." Simultaneously launched as a global poster campaign. No product. No features. No price. ## Why it worked P17 (design as idea): the typographic simplicity of "Think Different" is the creative act — two words that claim a worldview. P16 (long-form drama): the film's emotional arc builds from individual portraits to a collective statement about what kind of person changes the world. P06 (limitation as power): Apple's near-bankruptcy made the "crazy ones" framing authentic — they were genuinely on the verge of extinction. Restored brand confidence internally before external results materialized. Often cited as the campaign that saved Apple. ## Steal When a brand has lost its way, the recovery campaign should not sell anything. It should restate who the brand is for. "Think Different" does not describe Apple — it describes Apple's customers, and invites them to see themselves in that description. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p17]] - Sibling: [[absolut-absolut-campaign-1981.md|Absolut _____]] - Sibling: [[avis-we-try-harder-1962.md|We Try Harder]] - Emotion match: [[apple-1984-1984.md|1984]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
