Everyone claimed their friends list mattered. But did it really? BK identified a cultural tension: people call hundreds of acquaintances "friends" but the word has been devalued. What is a Whopper worth compared to a Facebook friendship? ## Mechanic A Facebook app: delete 10 Facebook friends, get a coupon for a free Whopper. The app notified the deleted friends that they had been sacrificed for a burger. The social notification was the mechanic — the humiliation of being worth less than one-tenth of a Whopper was the joke. Over 230,000 friends were deleted before Facebook shut the app down for violating privacy policies. The shutdown generated more PR than the campaign itself. ## Why it worked The idea exposed the hollow currency of Facebook friendship at the exact cultural moment when "friend" was being redefined by the platform. Getting unfriended because of a burger was funny, legible, and human. The app shutdown by Facebook was the second act — BK became the brand that Facebook was afraid of. The absurdism (P11) was structural: the idea that a friendship has a monetary value (1/10 of a Whopper) and can be compared publicly. ## Steal Find where social norms have created inflated currency (followers, friends, likes) and expose the inflation with a mechanic that puts a price on it. The social discomfort of the exposure is the campaign — not the coupon. Being shut down by a platform is free PR worth more than media spend. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p09]] - Sibling: [[red-bull-stratos-2012.md|Stratos]] - Sibling: [[snickers-hungerithm-2016.md|Hungerithm]] - Emotion match: [[absolut-absolut-campaign-1981.md|Absolut _____]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
