# The Scarecrow (Chipotle · 2013)

## Insight
Industrial food production is a horror story that most consumers prefer not to see — growth hormones, factory farms, processed food that looks nothing like its ingredients. Chipotle's entire business model is an argument against this system. The brand had the rare opportunity to make an ad that was actually truthful about what it was opposing.

## Mechanic
A four-minute animated film following a scarecrow through a dystopian corporate food system — Crow Foods Inc., where animals are factory-farmed and processed into food of disturbing abstraction. The scarecrow is complicit at first, then troubled, then defiant. He escapes to grow a small farm and sell real food. The film is wordless, set to a haunting cover of "Pure Imagination" from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory sung by Fiona Apple. The film launched simultaneously with a mobile game. 6.5 million YouTube views in three days.

## Why it worked
P16 (long-form drama): the emotional arc is complete — crisis of conscience, decision, action, resolution. The animation quality is feature-film level: every frame is designed to carry emotional weight. P13 (truth telling): Chipotle is telling the truth about a system it genuinely competes against. The brand has authentic standing to make this argument because its entire supply chain is built on rejecting what the film depicts. Won Cannes Grand Prix.

## Steal
When your brand's genuine competitive practice is the answer to a systemic problem, make the film about the problem. You do not need to appear in it. The audience will draw the connection when the problem is real and your solution is credible.
