Coca-Cola wanted to say something about peace and unity — but every brand trying that looked cynical. The insight: don't make a statement about the world, make a picture of the world you wish existed, and put it on a hill in Italy with real young people from every nation singing together. ## Mechanic A TV film directed by Harvey Gabor: a multicultural group of young people on a hilltop in Manziana, Italy, singing "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke" (written by Bill Backer at McCann). 200 young people from 30+ countries. Shot in Europe; the song became a hit when released as a standalone record. Coca-Cola received 100,000 letters asking where they could buy the song. It was re-released as a pop single by The New Seekers. ## Why it worked P07 (invisible brand): the brand appears in the jingle and a final product shot, but 95% of the film is a vision of human harmony that exists independently of the product. The audience doesn't feel sold to — they feel invited. P16 (long-form drama) gave the song time to build into a genuine emotional experience. P10 (serialization and ritual): "Hilltop" established a template for Coke as the brand of moments of universal human connection, a territory occupied for decades afterward. ## Steal In a divided cultural moment, the brand that pictures unity rather than comments on it earns the emotional territory. Don't address the conflict — embody its resolution. The image must be vivid enough that people want to live in it. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p16]] - Sibling: [[apple-1984-1984.md|1984]] - Sibling: [[apple-think-different-1997.md|Think Different]] - Emotion match: [[metro-trains-dumb-ways-to-die-2012.md|Dumb Ways to Die]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
