But people stay because switching feels like effort. The insight: dramatize the downstream consequences of keeping cable to a ridiculous logical extreme. ## Mechanic A series of spots following the chain-reaction logic of "when you have cable, you get angry, and when you get angry, you do X" — escalating through absurdist consequences until the viewer ends up in some spectacular disaster. Each spot ends with DirecTV's proposition. The campaign starred Rob Lowe playing both himself (the DirecTV user, confident and successful) and an alternate-universe version of himself degraded by cable dependency. ## Why it worked P11 (absurd as carrier): the chain-reaction narrative is a classic comedy structure, but applied with enough commitment and escalation to feel genuinely cinematic rather than merely clever. P16: Rob Lowe playing opposite himself requires performance calibration across two registers simultaneously — the joke works because both versions are played with equal seriousness. The spots were genuinely rewatched and shared. ## Steal The "logic chain" comedy structure (when X happens, Y follows, which leads to Z...) works when each step is surprising while remaining plausible within the universe of the ad. The comedy collapses when any step is too obvious or too arbitrary. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p11]] - Sibling: [[metro-trains-dumb-ways-to-die-2012.md|Dumb Ways to Die]] - Sibling: [[old-spice-man-your-man-could-smell-like-2010.md|The Man Your Man Could Smell Like]] - Emotion match: [[absolut-absolut-campaign-1981.md|Absolut _____]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
