The insight is that this is not embarrassing; it is the only honest form of adult tribalism left. ## Mechanic A long-running campaign of absurdist vignettes, each showing a fan or athlete doing something inexplicably extreme, ending with the line "It's Not Crazy, It's Sports." The spots do not explain ESPN — they validate the audience's existing emotional state and label it as belonging. ## Why it worked P11 (absurd as carrier) reframes fan obsession not as embarrassing but as the point. P16 (long-form drama within each spot) builds small emotional arcs — the escalation from mundane to insane. The tagline does not describe a product; it pardons a behavior. ESPN becomes the brand that understands sports fans more than sports fans understand themselves. ## Steal Find the behavior your audience does that they feel they should apologize for. Instead of softening it, name it and pardon it. The brand that gives people permission to be exactly who they already are builds deeper loyalty than any product promise. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p11]] - Sibling: [[metro-trains-dumb-ways-to-die-2012.md|Dumb Ways to Die]] - Sibling: [[old-spice-man-your-man-could-smell-like-2010.md|The Man Your Man Could Smell Like]] - Emotion match: [[absolut-absolut-campaign-1981.md|Absolut _____]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
