# Lamp (IKEA · 2002)

## Insight
People form sentimental attachments to old objects — lamps, chairs, cups — long past their useful life. This sentimentality is irrational and stops people from upgrading to better things. IKEA could use that irrationality against itself.

## Mechanic
A 60-second film directed by Spike Jonze: an old red lamp is carried to the curb and replaced. The camera lingers on the lamp in the rain as a sad orchestral score plays. A Swedish man breaks into frame: "Many of you feel bad for this lamp. That is because you are crazy. It has no feelings. And the new one is much better." The joke lands because the film earned the emotion it then punctured.

## Why it worked
The film spent 55 seconds sincerely building pathos for a lamp — using every emotional cue of a drama — then destroyed the sentimental frame in five seconds. The humor worked because it was earned, not cheap. More importantly, it addressed the actual behavioral barrier to purchasing IKEA furniture: guilt about discarding the old. By calling that guilt "crazy," it gave consumers permission to upgrade without shame. The absurdist twist (P11) was the delivery mechanism for a genuinely strategic message (P16 structure, emotional build).

## Steal
Identify the emotional barrier preventing a rational action. Dramatize that barrier so sincerely the audience recognizes themselves. Then puncture it with precision. The self-awareness of the puncture is what earns the laugh — and removes the barrier.
