# The Long Wait (John Lewis · 2011)

## Insight
Christmas excitement is typically assumed to be about receiving gifts — but what if a child's impatience was actually about the anticipation of giving?

## Mechanic
A film of a young boy barely sleeping, watching the clock, unable to contain himself through Christmas — the audience assumes he is desperate to receive presents. The reveal: he can't wait to give his parents the gift he's chosen for them.

## Why it worked
The inversion of the assumed motivation (selfish desire → generous love) lands as an emotional twist that reframes the entire preceding film. The reveal is not a plot trick — it is an argument about what Christmas actually means, delivered through a child's behaviour.

## Steal
Structure a narrative around an assumed motivation, then invert it in the final beats. The audience's complicity in the wrong interpretation makes the correction more emotionally resonant than if the truth had been stated from the start.
