The "Pepsi Generation" strategy inverted this: instead of fighting Coke, claim an entire generation. If Coke is history and tradition, Pepsi is now. Youth culture, music, celebrity — the future belongs to Pepsi because the future belongs to the young. ## Mechanic A long-running integrated campaign anchored by celebrity partnerships — most famously Michael Jackson (the most expensive endorsement deal of its era, ~$5 million) — music videos, TV spots, and events. The Jackson commercials attracted enormous cultural attention and effectively made Pepsi synonymous with pop culture's hottest moment. The "Choice of a New Generation" tagline framed every execution. ## Why it worked P10 (serialization and ritual): the campaign created an expectation — each Pepsi generation would have its defining cultural moment. P16 (long-form drama): the Jackson commercials were produced at feature-film quality, blurring the line between advertising and entertainment. The brand strategy was generational identity — Pepsi didn't sell a drink, it sold membership in a moment in time. This proved durable for two decades. ## Steal Don't fight the category leader on their terms. Instead, claim a territory the leader cannot occupy — in Pepsi's case, the future. If your competitor owns "established," own "what's next." The audience that doesn't want to be defined by the past will follow. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p10]] - Sibling: [[metro-trains-dumb-ways-to-die-2012.md|Dumb Ways to Die]] - Sibling: [[american-express-small-business-saturday-2010.md|Small Business Saturday]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
