The reason people don't believe car crashes will kill them is that they have never seen what it would actually take for a human body to survive a crash. ## Mechanic Working with trauma surgeon Christian Kenfield, road safety engineer David Logan, and artist Patricia Piccinini, TAC commissioned a life-size hyperrealistic sculpture of "Graham" — the only human form anatomically capable of surviving a car crash. Enlarged skull, ribcage that functions as a crumple zone, absent neck, reinforced knees. The sculpture toured Australian galleries and was accompanied by an interactive website. ## Why it worked Design as idea (P17): the sculpture itself was the argument — more powerful than any statistic or piece of footage. Truth-telling (P13): rather than showing what a crash does to a person, it showed what a person would need to look like to be safe — an argument the audience had no defence against. Moving the campaign into gallery space gave it cultural legitimacy and audience self-selection. ## Steal Convert a safety warning into an art object. When audiences have been numbed to data and shock footage, a physical artefact they choose to visit and engage with creates the engagement that interruption cannot. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p17]] - Sibling: [[absolut-absolut-campaign-1981.md|Absolut _____]] - Sibling: [[apple-think-different-1997.md|Think Different]] - Emotion match: [[always-like-a-girl-2014.md|Like a Girl]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
