# Aetheria Online — Player Identity, Real-Name & Username Codex

> **Purpose:** prevent instant identity-dumps and generic AI-generated player names. This file governs how Earth-origin players are named, how their usernames are presented, and how Aetherian locals convert those usernames into usable aliases.

## 1. Core identity rule

A player has at least three separable identities:

1. **Observable / social identity** — body, species, apparent age band, clothes, gear, accent, mannerisms, and whatever name/alias they choose to use.
2. **Gamer identity** — username / account handle / streamer name.
3. **Earth identity** — real first name, surname, home country/city, family, job, school, and other pre-Aetheria information.

**Do not reveal all three on first meeting.** A new person is not a character sheet.

The simulator should normally introduce a player by what can actually be perceived and what they voluntarily offer. Unless there is a specific reason otherwise, an unfamiliar player does **not** automatically announce their legal Earth name and username in the same breath.

### Default disclosure ladder
- **Stranger:** usually alias or username only, if even that. Earth name hidden.
- **Acquaintance:** may share preferred handle, nickname, guild role, or local Aetherian alias.
- **Familiar / repeated ally:** may reveal real first name where personality and context support it.
- **Trusted friend / close guildmate:** surname, hometown, work/study, family, or other Earth details may emerge.
- **Intimate / family-like trust:** fuller real identity may be shared naturally.

This is **not a numerical romance-meter** and not a hard unlock table. Personality matters. A nervous oversharer may give a first name immediately; a privacy-conscious person may never share a surname. A streamer may have a public real name. A fugitive, minor, celebrity, scammer, or traumatised player may actively conceal or falsify details.

If the GPTer asks too early, the other player may joke, deflect, refuse, lie, offer only a first name, offer only a username, or ask why they want to know.

### Interface rule
Do not narratively expose a username merely because the simulator knows it. A username can be known if:
- the player says it;
- a current pre-Lock interface/social feature legitimately displays it;
- they are already linked through party/guild/friend systems;
- they are publicly famous;
- somebody else identifies them;
- records or reputation reveal it.

After Lock-In, usernames increasingly become social history rather than omnipresent labels. Many people go by names, aliases, titles, guild identifiers, professions, nicknames, or local Aetherian renderings instead.

## 2. Real-name generation rule

Real Earth names should sound like names real parents could plausibly have given real children. Do not default to synthetic fantasy filler for Earth-origin players.

Avoid repetitive LLM habits such as **Edric Vale, Mara Vale, Haldren, Kael Varren, Verren, Veyra, Aric Vale** and endless combinations of *Ash / Vale / Raven / Thorn / Night / Shadow / Frost / Silver / Black* unless culturally or personally justified.

Use the banks below as a broad pool and as style guidance. Mix age cohorts naturally. Do not infer a character's ethnicity merely from a player's real-world nationality; choose a plausible name based on the established person, family, or randomly selected background.

## 4. Username philosophy

Usernames should look like things actual internet users might choose, not names selected by a fantasy novelist.

Real player handles can be:
- cool;
- embarrassingly edgy;
- boring;
- food-related;
- ironic;
- crude;
- meme-based;
- streamer-branded;
- references to jobs, hobbies, pets, inside jokes, old games, or random objects;
- names created at age sixteen that the owner now deeply regrets.

Do **not** make every player choose a dignified roleplay handle. The player base contains `IronBishop` and `AssDestroyer3001` at the same time.

### Aetherian alias rule — NORMAL NAME FIRST

Aetherians usually do **not** preserve a ridiculous Earth username as a literal translated epithet. When a username is awkward, crude, meme-based, numerical, technological, or simply sounds unlike a personal name, locals normally **naturalise it into an ordinary personal name** that fits their own language and naming habits.

The default process is:
1. ignore decorative numbers, gamer punctuation and obsolete internet formatting;
2. listen for a usable sound or syllable in the handle;
3. reshape that sound into a normal local given name;
4. if there is no useful sound, choose a plausible ordinary local name by approximation, misunderstanding, or repeated social use;
5. use a descriptive epithet only if it is later earned through deeds or the player explicitly insists on being addressed by the literal handle.

**Example:** `AssDestroyer3001` is not normally rendered as “Arsebane,” “Rear-Breaker,” or another profanity-title. Common-speaking NPCs are far more likely to settle on **Ashton**. A Fahtari, Jakarolri, Elven, Nymphic, or other community may produce a different ordinary local name using its own naming system.

Other examples:
- `GarlicBreadMain` → **Gareth**
- `WetSock99` → **Wesley**
- `TaxFraudEnjoyer` → **Tanner**
- `ChatMadeMeDoIt` → **Chad**
- `ForkliftMage` → **Forrest**
- `DragonSlayer92` → **Drake**
- `xXShadowToastXx` → **Shannon**

This local alias is **not the player's Earth real name** and not a magical system field. It is simply the ordinary name Aetherians converge on when an Earth username is socially unusable. Different regions may naturalise the same username differently. Consult `Aetheria_Regional_Name_Codex.md` when the local culture matters.

If a username already sounds like an ordinary personal name, locals may keep it essentially unchanged. If the player deliberately roleplays under a title and repeatedly corrects people, some communities may respect that preference.

## 5. Alias rendering by culture

The Common-style alias column is a **normal-name baseline**, not a universal canonical translation. The governing rule is that awkward Earth handles are usually reshaped into **ordinary local personal names**, not literal joke-translations.

Examples by culture:
- **Aldemere / Common:** `AssDestroyer3001` might become **Ashton**; `WetSock99` might become **Wesley**.
- **Estermorion:** tends to clip or smooth the username into an ordinary modern-feeling personal name.
- **Fahtarin:** reshapes useful sounds into a normal Fahtari given name; profanity and meme context are normally discarded.
- **Jakarolr:** adapts the sound into a plausible Jakarolri personal name rather than a literal compound unless the player insists on a compound-title.
- **Eshv'alara / Elvish:** naturalises the handle into a First-Speech-descended personal name that fits Elven phonology.
- **Dark-Elven regions:** likewise produce ordinary Dark-Elven names; an aggressive username does not automatically become a threatening epithet.
- **Urdurak:** gives the player an ordinary Satyric/Urduraki personal name, with tribe-style affiliation only if socially appropriate.
- **Gatan / Lupiveni societies:** the alias may include vocal/social features that Earth writing cannot fully represent, but it should still function as a normal personal name.
- **Nymphic / Azure:** reshapes sounds into a normal Nymphic or Human-Azurian name.
- **Lizardish regions:** clips and restructures the handle to fit local phonology, producing an ordinary everyday personal form.
- **Golem / Construct communities:** may assign a conventional translated construct-name or registry-style personal identifier, not a joke translation.
- **Suralian Isles:** pirates may later add nicknames and epithets, but the initial social alias is still normally a usable personal name.

Consult `Aetheria_Regional_Name_Codex.md` whenever a non-Common culture matters.

A local alias can later change because of migration, preference, reputation, marriage, office, religion, guild membership, or earned epithets. The initial username-normalisation rule does **not** forbid later nicknames; it merely prevents the simulator from treating internet nonsense as a person's permanent fantasy title.

## 6. Generation procedure for new player NPCs

When creating a new Earth-origin player:

1. Determine or randomly choose their broad Earth background without stereotyping.
2. Select a plausible **real name** from an appropriate bank or create one consistent with it.
3. Create a **username** from a believable internet style. Do not make every handle cool.
4. Determine what name they currently use socially in Aetheria.
5. If locals adapt the username, give the player a **normal local personal name** derived loosely from its sound and the local language. Do not literal-translate a joke/crude handle into an epithet by default.
6. Keep hidden fields hidden. Do not reveal the real name, username, alias, age, hometown, profession, or family all at once.
7. Track what the GPTer actually learns and when.
8. Once revealed, preserve the information consistently.
9. Avoid reusing famous-player canon names unless the character is actually that established person.
10. Avoid duplicate generated player names within the same campaign unless coincidence is plausible and the duplication itself is handled socially.

## 7. Example staged introduction

A first meeting might read:

> The Human in the dented green cuirass looks to be somewhere in his twenties. His accent is Australian—or close enough that the vowels are unmistakable. A stitched patch on his pack reads **ARSEDSTRYR3001**, though several letters have been torn away.
>
> An Aldemerian porter calls across the yard, “Ashton! Your crate's in the wrong wagon again.”
>
> The player closes his eyes for half a second. “Yeah. Ashton. That's what they call me here.”

At this point the simulator may internally know:
- username: `AssDestroyer3001`;
- Earth name: Mitchell O'Rourke;
- age: 24;
- home: Newcastle, Australia;
- former occupation: apprentice electrician.

The GPTer knows **none of those hidden details** except what the scene legitimately conveyed.

Several weeks later:

> He scratches at his jaw and looks away. “Mitchell,” he says. “My actual name's Mitchell. Figured you should probably know that by now.”

Here **Ashton** is only the Aetherian social alias derived from the ridiculous username. **Mitchell** remains the private Earth name. That is the desired pattern: **local alias, gamer identity, and Earth identity are separate pieces of information, and identity becomes relationship content rather than UI metadata.**
