# Climate Name Change (350Action · 2014)

## Insight
The World Meteorological Organization names tropical storms after people. Climate change makes extreme weather more frequent and severe. Politicians who deny climate change while receiving fossil fuel money are making those storms worse — so they should bear the names.

## Mechanic
A petition campaign to the World Meteorological Organization to name extreme weather events after climate-denying politicians. For every storm, a politician's name was assigned based on their denial record and industry funding. Supporters shared "storm warnings" on social media.

## Why it worked
The mechanic literalized the consequence in an unmistakable and shareable way. Naming a hurricane after a senator made the abstraction of climate policy into a visceral, personal statement. The petition format gave people a low-friction action with high symbolic payoff.

## Steal
When a complex policy issue needs a human face, find the mechanism that links action to consequence directly. The more literal the link, the more memorable the statement. Attribution as activism.
