# Phone It In (Skinny Mobile · 2018)

## Insight
Skinny is the cheapest mobile operator in New Zealand. In the telco category, "cheap" is communicated through comparisons, tariff tables, and discounts — all of which look like desperate value-messaging. What if the cheapness of the product was demonstrated through the cheapness of the advertising itself?

## Mechanic
All advertising was shot on an iPhone in the company's own break room. Employees served as actors. Sound was captured without professional equipment. Every video opened with a title card explaining the production approach: "We made these ads in our break room to keep your bills low." The lo-fi aesthetic was the proof of the promise.

## Why it worked
Behaviour inversion (P03): telecom advertising is among the most expensive and glossy category of communications; Skinny inverted this entirely. Absurdism (P11): the production poverty was extreme enough to be funny rather than cheap-looking. Crucially, the causal logic was stated explicitly — the bad production = your savings — making the absurdism a direct product benefit demonstration.

## Steal
If your brand's core proposition is cost efficiency, demonstrate it through the production choices of the advertising itself. The medium becomes the message. Expensive brands can't imitate this without destroying their positioning.
