The codes of sexy were so overused they had become invisible. If everyone is provocative, no one is provocative. ## Mechanic Diesel created a campaign branded "SFW XXX" (Safe For Work XXX) — explicit-sounding but deliberately absurd and non-explicit imagery. The campaign used the grammar of pornographic advertising (titles, framing, staging conventions) but substituted completely banal or comedic content for anything actually sexual. A series of films and print ads carried the parody. ## Why it worked P03 (behavior inversion): when every competitor uses explicit sexuality, using the signals of explicit sexuality without the content is a more powerful attention device than actual explicitness. The parody of the category's codes exposed how mechanical and empty those codes had become. P11 (absurdism): the deadpan commitment to the "SFW XXX" format generated the humor and the intrigue simultaneously. Diesel positioned itself as self-aware enough to mock the conventions it could have deployed sincerely. ## Steal In categories saturated with a specific content type (sex, aspirational lifestyle, technology), the most distinctive move is to parody those conventions with complete commitment. The parody works only when it's entirely earnest in execution — winking breaks the spell. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p11]] - Sibling: [[metro-trains-dumb-ways-to-die-2012.md|Dumb Ways to Die]] - Sibling: [[old-spice-man-your-man-could-smell-like-2010.md|The Man Your Man Could Smell Like]] - Emotion match: [[absolut-absolut-campaign-1981.md|Absolut _____]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
