# Laundrette (Levi's · 1985)

## Insight

In 1985, Levi's 501s were dying in the UK — associated with old men and workwear. The brand needed to be reborn as a symbol of young male desirability. Nick Kamen stripping in a laundrette, unselfconscious and unashamed, didn't sell jeans — it sold the idea of what wearing them could mean about you.

## Mechanic

A 60-second TV film: a young Nick Kamen walks into a 1950s American launderette, strips down to his boxer shorts, and puts his 501s in the wash. The women in the launderette watch with open desire. Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" plays. No dialogue. The commercial aired once before generating 300,000 phone enquiries to Levi's. Boxer shorts sold out across the UK. Levi's sales rose 800% within a year.

## Why it worked

P08 (craft as message): Jonathan Glazer's precise period reconstruction transferred authenticity — if the brand could recreate this world this perfectly, it belonged to it. P16 (long-form drama) used restraint and silence as sexual tension. Nick Kamen's unselfconsciousness was the opposite of the hard-sell swagger that characterized men's advertising — vulnerability as desirability. The commercial essentially invented a new template for male aspirational advertising in the UK.

## Steal

The most powerful product claim can often be made without words, without the product being the visual focus, and without anyone explaining what the claim is. Find the situation that makes the audience feel the benefit rather than understand it.
