# Let's Motor (MINI Cooper · 2002)

## Insight
American cars in 2002 were getting bigger — SUV culture was at its peak. MINI was a small European car entering a market that celebrated excess. Most brands would apologize for smallness or try to compete on American terms. MINI could make smallness the joke, the stance, and the identity.

## Mechanic
An integrated campaign built around the absurdity of a tiny car in an oversized country. A MINI was strapped to the roof of a Ford Excursion SUV and driven around America. OOH featured headlines like "The SUV backlash officially starts now." Print, outdoor, and events celebrated the car's smallness as a philosophical position rather than a limitation. Tagline: "Let's Motor."

## Why it worked
CP+B understood that MINI couldn't win on American car-buying criteria, so they changed the criteria. The campaign turned the size deficit into a cultural statement at the exact moment anti-SUV sentiment was building. The absurdism (MINI on an SUV roof) was a visual argument that needed no copy. Buyers who chose MINI felt they were choosing a position, not just a vehicle.

## Steal
When you enter a market where your product loses by established metrics, change the metrics. Find the cultural moment where the establishment's strength becomes its liability. Put your weakness on the roof of their strength — literally or metaphorically.
