# Hacky Sack (Nike Golf · 2000)

## Insight

Tiger Woods at the height of his dominance was genuinely doing things in golf that no one had done before — his extraordinary control and athleticism had no adequate category language. Rather than explaining the technical superiority, Nike showed what that level of control actually feels like in a completely different context: bouncing a golf ball on a club head like a hacky sack.

## Mechanic

A TV commercial: Tiger Woods bounces a golf ball on the face of his wedge — dozens of times, no drop — then flips it up and smashes it out of frame. The spot is almost entirely silent except for the sound of ball on club. No voiceover. No product claim. Just the sound of extraordinary skill displayed casually, as if this were the most natural thing in the world.

## Why it worked

P16 (long-form drama): a sustained single action — the bouncing — builds tension through repetition and the audience's awareness that it could fail at any moment. P11 (absurd as carrier): a golf pro doing hacky sack is inherently comic, but the skill level makes it simultaneously awe-inspiring. The commercial communicated Tiger's preternatural coordination in a way that golf footage never could, because the context had no jargon — anyone could understand bouncing a ball.

## Steal

Show what extraordinary skill looks like in the least expected context. Remove all professional framing and the expertise becomes visible to people who don't follow the sport. The simpler the game, the more impressive the mastery looks.
