# The Cage (Nike · 2002)

## Insight
Before the World Cup, football's most authentic form is the cage game — street football played in a confined space where every player's individual skill is exposed. The world's best players all came from somewhere small. The cage is where greatness begins, before systems and teams.

## Mechanic
A long-form film featuring the world's top footballers competing in a cage tournament — one-on-one or small group, high intensity, pure individual skill. The format of street football applied to elite players, stripping away team context.

## Why it worked
The cage game makes elite players' individual skill visible in a way that match footage cannot. It also connects football's global elite back to their origins in informal settings, which resonates with the sport's fan base worldwide. Nike owns street football culture by dramatizing it.

## Steal
For team sports, find the individual version of the game that reveals the player's personal identity rather than their system role. Individual excellence in a collective sport is rarely shown — that gap is brand territory.
