The question in 1987 was not how to sell a shoe but how to represent a man whose athletic gifts seemed to exceed the language of sports marketing. ## Mechanic A poster/OOH execution: Michael Jordan in mid-air, captured in a moment that appears to defy gravity, with the word "Wings" as the only text alongside the Swoosh. The image was taken by photographer Annie Leibovitz. No product visible. No claims. The poster became one of the most iconic sports images of the decade and a collector's item. ## Why it worked P17 (design as idea): the image is the argument — Jordan in flight, framed as mythological rather than athletic. The word "Wings" transforms the image from sports photography into something closer to religious iconography. P16 (long-form drama): a still image can have narrative — this one implies an entire story of ascent and possibility in a single frame. Nike's restraint (no product, no copy) amplified the mythic quality. ## Steal When your brand is associated with genuine human excellence, the most powerful communication is the one that comes closest to pure image — removing all commercial framing and allowing the person to exist as a cultural figure rather than a brand vehicle. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p17]] - Sibling: [[absolut-absolut-campaign-1981.md|Absolut _____]] - Sibling: [[apple-think-different-1997.md|Think Different]] - Emotion match: [[guinness-surfer-1999.md|Surfer]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
