# Carousel (Philips · 2009)

## Insight
Philips Cinema 21:9 TV offered an unprecedented ultrawide format that no film or TV content had been produced to fill. The feature was technically impressive but visually abstract — without a demonstration, audiences couldn't understand what 21:9 meant experientially.

## Mechanic
A 4-minute cinematic short film created specifically for the 21:9 ratio, directed by Adam Berg. A frozen crime scene at a wedding — a single continuous camera move through a moment of chaos, suspended in time, circling around the frozen figures. The camera's movement revealed angles impossible in standard 16:9. The film was designed to exist only in the 21:9 format — viewing it in any other format destroys the composition.

## Why it worked
P08 (craft as message): the extraordinary technical craft of the frozen-moment execution was immediately legible as proof of cinematic capability — the TV that could display this was evidently different. P17 (design as idea): the 21:9 aspect ratio was the concept; the film existed to demonstrate that the ratio created something impossible in standard dimensions. The Cannes Grand Prix recognized what made this genuinely new: a product demonstration that was simultaneously a work of art that the product had made possible.

## Steal
When a new format or technology creates a capability that is invisible in standard demonstration, make content that can only exist because of that capability. The content is proof of concept and advertisement simultaneously.
