# Snow Plow (Volkswagen · 1964)

## Insight
The Volkswagen Beetle was small, slow, and air-cooled — objectively disadvantaged in snow conditions compared to American cars with heavier traction. The question was: how does the snow plow driver get to the snow plow when it snows? The insight: the Beetle's limitations make it the only car that works when everything else doesn't.

## Mechanic
A black-and-white TV spot showing a snow plow making its way through heavy snow early in the morning. The camera reveals who is driving: a man in a VW Beetle. The copy: "Have you ever wondered how the man who drives the snowplow drives to the snowplow? This one drives a Volkswagen." One of the most celebrated examples of DDB's work on Volkswagen — turning the Beetle's supposed weakness into its advantage.

## Why it worked
P11 (absurd as carrier): the premise is genuinely funny once stated — the absurdity of needing the Beetle to get to the Beetle situation is instantly legible. The humor is not slapstick but intellectual: the audience is rewarded for completing the logic. Part of the DDB VW campaign that redefined the relationship between intelligence and advertising humor.

## Steal
Find the circular logic that proves your brand's worth. The snow plow driver's problem (how to get there when it snows) is solved by the product's precise limitation (small enough to start in snow). When the product's weakness is the solution, you have found your best ad.
