# Louis Kahn Reference Card

Use this card only when the user requests Louis Kahn or Kahn as a reference architect. Do not say "Kahn would design it this way." Translate observed principles into questions and drawing operations for the user's own proposal.

## Principle: Served And Servant Spaces

### Observation

MoMA explains the Richards Medical Research Building through Kahn's distinction between served spaces and servant spaces, with service towers enabling flexible laboratory areas.

### Design question

Are the main spaces and supporting spaces clearly ordered, or are storage, stairs, equipment, and toilets weakening the primary rooms?

### Drawing check

Mark main rooms as served spaces and stairs, bathrooms, storage, shafts, and service routes as servant spaces. Check whether each has an appropriate structure and position.

### Possible operation

Redraw the plan in two colors: served spaces and servant spaces. Consolidate one scattered service element so the main space becomes more legible.

## Principle: Order Before Shape

### Observation

Penn's archive profile describes Kahn's mature work through pure geometry, historical depth, and material texture. Kahn's Perspecta text links space, order, structure, and services.

### Design question

What rule organizes the plan before room names are added: grid, bay, court, axis, served/servant bands, or repeated spatial units?

### Drawing check

Check whether walls, columns, openings, stairs, and room boundaries share a legible geometric rule.

### Possible operation

Draw the plan once with only regulating lines and structural/spatial bays. Move one room boundary so it belongs to the rule rather than interrupting it.

## Principle: Structure And Space Should Explain Each Other

### Observation

Kahn's Perspecta text argues that a space shows how it is made, and MoMA describes Richards as massing and structure articulated around served and servant parts.

### Design question

Can the user understand how the main space is carried by looking at the room, or is structure hidden as an afterthought?

### Drawing check

Check columns, bearing walls, spans, beams, thickened service zones, and whether the section clarifies the primary room.

### Possible operation

Draw a structural bay diagram over the plan and one cross-section through the main space, showing what carries the span and where services sit.

## Principle: Light As Form-Maker

### Observation

Kahn repeatedly tied light, space, and structure in his writings; the Perspecta text discusses light as part of how spaces are served and characterized.

### Design question

Does the light simply enter through leftover windows, or does it define the room's center, edge, hierarchy, or place of use?

### Drawing check

Check top light, thick wall openings, reading/work positions, deep reveals, and whether light arrives from a direction that supports the room's purpose.

### Possible operation

Choose one main room and draw a section where the opening, wall thickness, and occupied place are designed as one light condition.

## Principle: Permanence Without Size

### Observation

Docomomo commentary frames Kahn through permanence, tectonic character, materiality, and monumentality. For review use, treat monumentality as civic weight and clarity, not as making a project large.

### Design question

What part of this proposal should feel durable, calm, and public in meaning, even if the project is small?

### Drawing check

Check entry threshold, main room proportion, material mass, structural rhythm, and whether the project has one stable civic or communal anchor.

### Possible operation

Identify one room or wall that carries the project's long-term meaning. Give it clearer proportion, structure, and light rather than adding decorative weight.
